The Lanner Falcon (Falco biarmicus) is a favourite amongst Falconers, for the ease of training and readiness of the bird to adapt to accepting the Falconer as a source of food.
A large Falcon, it is often mistaken for the Saker Falcon. The Lanner Falcon is a common bird in Africa and south Europe, with a wingspan of up to 40".
The Sherrif of Nottingham (from Robin Hood's Days), would most likely have hunted with a Lanner Falcon!
